The Chamber of Commerce has struck a deal with the Township and the economic development office, and will operate the tourist booth this year.
Under terms of funding help offered by the economic development office, the Chamber will be required to develop a business plan and take over, with Township support, the annual operation of the tourist booth.
“We are attempting to make this a long-term solution,” said Chamber president Joerg Boileau on Wednesday.
The deal comes after Council turned down several different staffing options at the tourist booth. It has steadfastly refused to pay more than the building’s basic maintenance costs (about $4500 per year).
The economic development office offered to grant the Chamber $3,000 to operate the booth if the township would contribute the same amount toward salaries. When Council turned down that offer, the Chamber went back to the economic development office to ask if it would consider the township’s maintenance costs at the building as an in-kind contribution to the deal.
The Atikokan Economic Development Corporation Board approved the new deal with the conditions.
Chamber manager Linda Braun said Wednesday that the Chamber plans to open the booth during the first two weekends in June. It will be opened daily after June 15.
The booth will be staffed by the Chamber, two youths (applications are now being accepted – write the Chamber at Box 997, and one senior. The Chamber hopes to recruit volunteers as well to staff the both).
